Well pump FAQ

Straight answers for homes on private wells in Licking County.

Symptoms

What does it mean when the pump clicks on and off every few seconds?

That is called short-cycling. The usual suspects are a pressure tank that has lost its air charge or a failing pressure switch. See pressure switch repair and pressure tank replacement.

Why does the pressure drop while I shower?

A tank that no longer holds a good air charge cannot cushion demand, so pressure sags while water is running. A tank is a common cause; a worn pump is another. A diagnosis tells you which.

Should I buy a new pump before I know what failed?

No. A pump is often the most expensive part, and no-water calls can come from a breaker, a switch or a control box. Diagnose first.

Rules & permits

Does replacing a well pump need a permit in Ohio?

Ohio Administrative Code rule 3701-28-01 defines "repair" to include servicing or replacing pumps or pumping equipment, and defines repair as work that does not require a permit. Work that alters the well itself is different. Read the full guide.

Who is allowed to replace a well pump for hire?

Under OAC 3701-28-18, only private water systems contractors registered with the Ohio Department of Health may install pumping equipment or repair a private water system for hire. Ask to see the registration before you hire anyone.
