No water from your well? Diagnosis in Licking County, OH

Find the failed part before you pay for a pump you may not need.

When the water stops, the pump gets blamed first, but it is often not the cause. A diagnosis works from cheapest to most expensive so you are not buying a pump to fix a tripped breaker.

The order is simple. Power first: the breaker and the disconnect. Then the pressure switch. Then the tank and its charge. Then the wiring and, on some submersible systems, the control box. Last, the pump itself.

A photo of your tank, gauge and switch sent with the request lets us narrow it down before anyone drives out.

What gets checked

  • Breaker and disconnect: power reaching the system.
  • Pressure switch: contacts, settings, clogged port.
  • Pressure tank: air charge and bladder.
  • Wiring and control box where the system has one.
  • The pump: only after the cheaper causes are ruled out.

No-Water Diagnosis: questions, answered

What should I check before calling?

Look at the breaker for the well pump and reset it once if it has tripped. If it trips again, leave it off and call. Do not keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping.

Is it safe to use the water after it comes back?

If the well was repaired, Ohio rule 3701-28-11 requires disinfection before the water is used for drinking. Ask what was done at the end of the visit.
