Pressure switch repair in Licking County, OH

The switch tells the pump when to start and stop. When it fails, the whole system looks broken.

The pressure switch reads system pressure and turns the pump on and off. Burned contacts, a clogged sensing port or a bad setting can make the pump cycle rapidly, run without stopping, or not start at all.

Because the switch is a small, low-cost part compared with a pump or tank, it is worth checking early. OAC 3701-28-01 lists switches among the parts whose servicing or replacement counts as a repair.

Switch work is power work. It is done with the power off and the system depressurized, which is one reason to have a contractor do it.

Signs of a switch problem

  • The pump will not start though the breaker is on.
  • The pump will not shut off and the system keeps building pressure.
  • Rapid on-off cycling with a tank that checks out fine.
  • Burned or pitted contacts visible under the switch cover.
  • Pressure settings that drifted from where they were set.

Pressure Switch Repair: questions, answered

Can I replace the switch myself?

It is power work on a pressurized system. Ohio rule 3701-28-18 provides an exemption for an owner doing no-permit work on their own dwelling without hiring anyone, but turn off power at the breaker and relieve pressure first, and call a pro if you are unsure.

Is it the switch or the tank?

Both cause cycling. See pressure tank replacement, or request a diagnosis and we sort it out.
